FUNDUS FLUORESCEIN ANGIOGRAPHY (FFA) – FACTS TO KNOW
Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) - a useful tool to aid in:
» FFA is an out patient procedure takes around 15 minutes times and involves taking serial photographs of your retina.
» Purpose is to study the circulation of a radio opaque dye (Fluorescein) through your retinal layers and blood vessels, there by obtaining detailed information about various disorders.
» It is a purely diagnostic procedure, done to aid the diagnosis of retinal problems, to monitor progress. It does not involve any treatment and does not alter the disease process.
» Technique involves injecting a known volume of fluorescein an iodine based dye into anti unbital veinous and taking serial photographs of retina for next 10 – 15 mins. Some itching at injection site may occur. It will disappear in 2 days. It persists or ___ inform us.
PATIENT PREPARATION
» Patients need to come at informed time on empty stomach (so no food or water intake
for minimum 6 hrs. before the procedure).
» Both eyes are dilated.
» An attender has to accompany the patient.
» Informed consent form has to be signed by patient and attender.
» Any systemic allergies to any food stuff or medicines have to be informed.
» Please bring your general health records and previous eye examination records.
» Asthmatics on inhalers to bring it
» Skip your insulin on proposed day of FFA. Can take all other medicines.
Post FFA instruction
» Can leave after IV line removed.
» Can resume normal routine activities on same day.
» Can wash face, wipe or touch eyes.
» Avoid moving out in excess sunlight for 2 days.
» 2 days urine may be discoloured (orangeish) due to die excretion.
SIDE EFFECTS DURING PROCEDURE
» Some ___ or vomiting sensating experienced is very common.
» Life threating allergies reactions are rare.

Pan Retinal Photocoagulation (P R P) – is an out patient treatment procedure done towards treatment of diabetic Retinopathy and some other retinal vascular disorders.
» An out patient procedure does not involve hospital admission.
» A non invasive procedure – involves no cutting or suturing or injection.
» Done under topical anaesthesia (under the effect of anaesthetic drops).
Pre procedure preparation
» Can come after light breakfast.
» Takes all medicines as usual.
» To come accompanied by some one.
» Eyes for treatment are dilated.
» Informed consent taken.
Post PRP Instructions
» Some glare, vague headache, ______ shadowing of vision, dim vision, in evening, are
commonly expected side effects. Most of them are temporary and ---------- off.
» Pain __ can be taken if head ache too severe. (optional not compulsory)
» Drops to be put as instructed\ed by doctor.
» Eyes can be washed, face washed, head bath taken normally.
» Normal routine activities can be resumed from same or next day.
» Any outstation journeys, heavy work, please ask your doctor for permissions.
Procedure proper
» FD ND Yag laser shots are delivered into retina and _________ aimed to control
diabetic retinopathy.
» It’s done in a single or 2, or 3 sitting in each eye depending on the extent of your
problem and to doctor’s discretion.
» End result expected in _ in the swelling and blurring.
» Visual effects cannot be predicted immediately. It’s a gradual process.
» After 1 month of laser final _ can be assessed and glasses prescribed till then old
specs can be used.
